Class with Nora // This Is Not (just) A Sad Story

SOLD OUT EVENT

Nora McInerny is teaching a 1 day class at The Loft Literary Center!

Everyone has a sad story, but sad stories are rarely only sad. Join memoirist and reluctant grief expert Nora McInerny as she brings her insight, humor and story telling craft to the exploration of stories about the most terrible things in life. Students will learn to use humor, insight and candor as they conquer writing about the most challenging aspects of their own lives and selves.

Using essays from writers like Anne Lamott and Joan Didion, students will explore the multidimensional complexities of living and writing sad stories. How do we deal with our feelings while writing about the most tragic parts our lives? How do we honor our own perspective while writing about others? When does a sad story become tragedy porn and when is it valuable? How do we address the most challenging parts of our selves and our lives with both honesty and empathy?

Heartbreakers: Forever? Forever-ever? NY, NY

Could our genes affect our romantic choices? Does love inhabit a particular region of the brain? If this song makes us too sad to drive straight, why are we playing it on repeat?

Rapper and essayist Dessa returns with the next event in this series - a collision of art, music and scientific research on love, sex and human adventures in pair-bonding.

When a relationship ends, by choice or circumstance, where should we keep all the feels? How "over it" do we really get?

Featuring house musician DJ Paper Tiger, a Brooklyn-based hip hop producer, with special musical guest Alexei Moon Caselle and Nora McInerny, a Minneapolis-based writer and the widow of Aaron Purmort, known from his viral obituary as Spider-Man.

Bring a date. Find a date. (But please don’t leave your date with us—we’re taking some me time right now.)
